Hoboken Must: Dom’s Bakery Grand

Loaves like these are hanging out all around Dom’s

Hi there!

It’s been a while…

I started this blog last summer when I was laid off from my job due to the pandemic, and thought it would be a super fun passion project to work on. I was right - it was super fun, but it also was becoming a little time consuming to think of new recipes or post ideas, especially when I started a new job. Suddenly the food I was making was for this purpose only, not to enjoy, not to try out, not to share with my friends, but just to work on something.

So I decided I’ll be writing about everything and anything I want to share as it relates to food, including the food I’ve been eating that I didn’t make myself!

I want to start with a Hoboken local fave, right around the corner: Dom’s Bakery Grand.

When I walked into Dom’s, I had one mission in mind: get something to bring to a housewarming party. I had no idea what I would find there, and it didn’t even cross my mind that I could be going to a bakery that really just bakes bread. Let me tell you something, a loaf of plain bread is not a good housewarming gift, no matter how good it is.

Luckily, when I announced that it was my first time going to Dom’s, another customer exclaimed “come with me!” and brought me back to see one of the oldest features in Hoboken — an oven built in directly to the wall of the building. It was still warm from 8 hours earlier when the bread was being baked. They don’t make ovens like this anymore for obvious safety reasons, but Dom’s was grandfathered in.

After talking to Esther, the lovely woman who runs the counter, I learned that Dom’s bakes the bread for most of the places in town, like one of my other faves, Fiore’s. They also have Sfogliatelle, the only dessert they make, but you have to go early to score one or six of those.

I ended up getting a pepperoni bread, a sausage bread, and a small round loaf which I got to enjoy for the next few days. They were a hit at the housewarming party and I would definitely recommend paying Dom’s a visit, if not for the bread, then to see the very cool oven.
